In memory of a basketball legend, last week the Croatian Mint released a tribute to Drazen Petrovic on the 60th anniversary of his birth. Petrovic was a maestro on the basketball court and it was an absolute tragedy when his life was cut short due to a car accident in 1993, passing away at age 28 in the prime of his career. The Japan Mint has had a very busy August with numerous new products being released into the market. One that struck me is the 2024 Japan Coin Set, which combines aspects of Japanese culture seamlessly to create a striking and powerful set that will be treasured by many. Perth Mint went all out in August, making headlines in Australia with the release of the opulent 2024 10oz Gold Proof Jewelled Turtle coin. In an incredible feat of minting, and with a tiny mintage of just 8 coins, the work features pink diamonds from the Argyle Diamond Mine in Western Australia. Christmas has come early at the Royal Australian Mint with the release of a new September 2024-dated 50c Christmas Festive Florals design in both silver proof and base metal uncirculated. Earlier this month, RAM released rolls of circulating coins (10c, 20c, 50c and $1) featuring the new King Charles III effigy. The release was particularly novel, with RAM announcing ‘premium’ rolls (featuring an obverse at one end and a reverse at the other) and ‘non-premium’ rolls which were a double-head or a double-tails. A great way to ensure nothing goes to waste! As has become more customary, RAM is using EQL to launch both products to reduce the incidence of bots and scamming, in an effort to get the maximum amount of product into the hands of collectors. What a fortnight this has been! Two weeks of wall-to-wall Olympic sporting excellence in Paris, which has finally come to an end. We now have a couple of weeks to rest before launching into the Paralympics which will also be a wonderful event. Then of course, passing of the baton to Los Angeles, where the US Mint will have an opportunity to build upon the great work done by Monnaie de Paris in 2024.
In addition, many descended upon the ANA in Chicago and enjoyed the opportunity to connect with industry partners in person. ANA also signals the time of year for Krause Publications to host their Coin of the Year Awards, which took place on August 8th.

Before we start our global travels looking at what is going on across the minting world, let’s pause for a moment to congratulate the city of Paris for staging an incredible Opening Ceremony for the 2024 Olympic Games! Despite the inclement weather, it was a perfect way to commence this magnificent event, showcasing some of the most iconic architecture including the iconic Monnaie de Paris positioned by the Seine. I can see that many Mints have found creative ways to support their respective national teams at the Games.
To distract us from the sports overload, the ANA World’s Fair of Money is of course being held in Chicago from 6 – 10 August. In July, the Royal Mint announced the two charities that they would be supporting for the coming year: 2wish and Ty Hafan. TRM welcomed CEO of 2wish, Rhian Manning MBE, to deliver an impactful session to employees. Great to see TRM being so progressive in supporting such worthwhile community-based causes that are making a huge difference to people’s lives. The Perth Mint hosted an amazing event for NAIDOC week; an Aboriginal painting workshop conducted by the renowned Beverly Egan. Our friends at KOMSCO have been very busy during the first half of July – but we will focus on a sporting theme for this update! The Mint launched the Paris Olympics Team Korea Cheering Gold Card in cooperation with the Korean Sports Association to support the national athletes competing in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Continuing with the sporting theme, INCM hosted the 4th Annual INCM Imprensa Nacional – Casa da Moeda race! The 10km race put participants to the test, with arguably the most impressive performance being from Olympic marathon champion Rosa Mota who won the women’s sector. This will be the first opportunity for the public to enjoy a new tourism, educational and retail experience in a new immersive setting. Perth Mint reported their precious metal sales for June, with 22,520 troy ounces of gold and 491,946 oz of silver sold.
